As I begin my second year as chair of UC San Diego’s Department of Computer Science and Engineering, we are starting to emerge from the depths of a global pandemic. In the past year, we approached our educational and research missions in new and creative ways as we adapted to a new reality. But some things have remained the same: our commitment to conducting impactful research and to educating the thought leaders of a digital tomorrow.
In this last academic year, our researchers have been recognized with the Golden Goose Award from the American Association for the Advancement of Science for their work into automotive cybersecurity and several Test of Time awards for research that has remained seminal for decades. Twelve CSE and CSE-affiliated faculty members are part of a tremendous $20 million NSF effort to pursue foundational breakthroughs at the nexus of artificial intelligence and optimization through the AI Institute for Learning-enabled Optimization at Scale (TILOS).
I hope you enjoy this snapshot of the accomplishments, activity and spirit of our UC San Diego CSE Department.
